Although breastfeeding is a wonderful, natural process, it’s also challenging! From latch issues to sleepless nights, to supplementing with formula, to transitioning to bottle feeding, to pumping and storing milk, there are many issues that might arise during a woman’s breastfeeding journey. La Leche League was founded to help provide support for breastfeeding women. The La Leche League St Louis organization provides a number of support services to help women as they feed their little ones.
La Leche League was formed to help families who choose to breastfeed. They do this through peer support, encouragement, information, and education. Helping to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding and the bond between a baby and a mother. La Leche League of Greater St Louis is committed to diversity and inclusion, supporting breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and human milk-feeding families, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, family structure, ability, language, or socio-economic status. La Leche League strives to support all families as they navigate their breastfeeding journey, providing a community of support so that they never feel alone in their struggles.
Although breastfeeding is a natural process, it doesn’t always come naturally. La Leche League provides personal help when a family needs extra support or encouragement. Leaders are experienced breastfeeding mothers who have gotten training and accreditation from La Leche League International. So they can assist families with all aspects of breastfeeding. Whether families have questions about breastfeeding before the baby’s birth, during the first few days following delivery, or several months postpartum, La Leche League leaders are always ready to help.
One of the greatest services provided by La Leche League in St Louis is group meetings, where moms, babies, and support people are always welcome. Meetings are in person or via video calls and occur several times each month. Topics include the advantages of breastfeeding, the start of breastfeeding, avoiding and overcoming difficulties, nutrition, and weaning. La Leche League also provides a lending library of books and resources on childbirth and breastfeeding.
Families can become La Leche League members, joining an international network of breastfeeding help and parenting support. Memberships bill annually and help support La Leche League for future generations.
Families can access phone help for breastfeeding questions between meetings. They can call a group leader with questions about milk supply, the baby’s latch, sore breasts, engorgement, sore nipples, returning to work, pumping, dealing with a fussy baby, growth spurts, and how to go about weaning.
La Leche League also does annual events for World Breastfeeding Week. Families can join others from the greater St. Louis area to celebrate. This year’s theme is Step Up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support. Events include a virtual dance party in August, where families can submit a video of themselves or their kids “stepping up” to support breastfeeding on the La Leche League’s Facebook page.
Breastfeeding isn’t always easy. La Leche League strives for the goal of supporting families as they learn to feed their little ones. La Leche League St Louis helps breastfeeding families through phone support, in-person and virtual meetings, and a variety of events throughout the year.
It is so easy to get lost in the craziness and forget what a joy motherhood can be. As a mother of SIX, I get it! That is why I love getting to connect with everyone I work with and help them with blogs like these and the ones below. So check them out and more of my work. Then I would love to talk about your next session!
