How many of us ever thought to bring in a professional photographer to capture the birth of our babies? I NEVER thought to do something like this, but I sure wish I had. Not surprising at all, birth photography is starting to become a huge trend. When I was born, and this is probably true for many of you as well, the only photographer was Dad. While they probably try their best, many times they are too caught up in the miracle happening in front of them to focus on the only job they were given by mom. But hey, can you blame them? haha. Having a photographer capture this moment, and turn it into your little one’s first chapter of their book of life, is priceless.
This was my first time shooting a birth and I had no idea what to expect. One thing I did know was that there was NO WAY that doctor was letting me into that surgery room. But I was thrilled beyond words that my close friend, Tish asked me to be there to capture what I could. This was Trish’s third baby (and not her last!) and was having another c-cetion. We got there around 5am and waited while Trish was prepped for surgery. I got what I could before they were ready to take her and then went to the cafeteria to grab a quick snack. I came back to find scrubs waiting for me!!!! Can you believe it?!?!?!?! I was the first photographer to ever be invited back to the surgery room at their hospital. What an honor!
Trish’s husband, Dale and I waited in the hallway until they were ready for us. I didn’t have a c-cetion for the birth of my kids, so I had no idea what I was walking into. But Dale walked me through the whole thing. 🙂 The nurses told me I was only allowed to sit in a chair and take photos from there. But one nurse did let me peak over the curtain for a quick shot before they baby was taken out. Once Deakon was born I was able to follow him around as the nurses cleaned him up and got him ready to meet his mommy. I watched as the nurses gave Deakon to his mom for the first time and I was able to capture so much emotion in these photos. After the surgery, we went out to show baby Deakon to the rest of the family who was waiting with so much anticipation. You can see pure joy on Deakon’s big sister’s face as she meets him for the first time.
Watching the birth of baby Deakon was something I will never forget. It was truly an honor to watch a new life come into the world, and I am so thankful to Trish and Dale for letting me be a part of it. <3

A rating of 5 is not high enough for Kelly!! Kelly is an amazing photographer, was absolutely wonderful to work with, and was quick to reply to emails. Shes an upbeat and positive person, which made out photo sessions comfortable and fun!!
